FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

WHO? Work&Learn classes are for small groups of adults who want spiritual strengthening or a job or a more rewarding job. Each class features instruction and a time for small group discussion. Many mentors take the course to train themselves to become a mentor.

WHAT? Classes meet for two hours, one night every week, for 13 weeks. The mentoring and training curriculum is called Classes to Change Your Life.

The Classes are also for people who want to respond to

  • The Great Commandment
  • The Great Commission
  • Matthew 25

and/or want to gain or mentor others in employability skills for work or ministry.

WHEN?  See EVENTS for up to date information.

WHERE? Classes have met at:

  • Huntington Street Baptist Church, 29 Huntington Street, New London, CT 06320
  • Pleasant Valley Community of Prayer & Praise, 20 Grove Ave., Groton, CT 06340
  • Church of the City, 268 State St., New London, CT 06320
  • Church of the City, 35 Redden Avenue, New London, CT 06320

  • Cornerstone City Church, 248 Broadway, Norwich, CT 06360

  • and will meet on Zoom starting September 1, 2020.

WHY?  It costs a small amount for Work&Learn to mentor, train, help employ and retain a person who has been challenged getting or holding a job. Without this help, 55% of ex-offenders commit additional crimes and recidivate, costing $50,000 each year for incarceration. Without this help, homeless, people in recovery and others have difficulty finding shelter in New London County. With this help, returning citizens, recovering addicts and others achieve employment which is usually essential to recovery.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE A CHRISTIAN TO TAKE WORK&LEARN CLASSES? No. Work&Learn is Bible-based. We do not screen. Mentoring and training classes are open to anyone who is willing and able to attend and participate actively. To turn anyone away would not be Christian.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE A CHRISTIAN TO VOLUNTEER IN WORK&LEARN CLASSES? No. Christian Coaches give spiritual counseling. Other volunteer coaches assess how much you like different kinds of work, how to strengthen your money muscle, how to use the Internet, how to do resumes and job search, and give other kinds of assistance. Participants also need help during the week taking steps to improve their lives.

WHY DO YOU SPEND ABOUT ONE-HALF OF THE CLASS TIME ON BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES AND ONE-HALF ON DEVELOPING EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS?

People have to be prepared to succeed after they get the job they want.

Graduates report that spiritual strengthening helps them the most.

Many factors contribute to these results:

  • Testimonies from classmates who have had their lives transformed
  • Inspired teaching by a dozen different skilled and committed pastors
  • Spiritual mentors who are there to help
  • Coaches giving professional help and serving as friends
  • Small group discussions bringing out and dealing honestly with personal issues

Participants gain strength and confidence and take practical steps to change their lives. We do encourage people to believe the One revealed in the Bible. Results can be judged by the retention rates and promotions gained by graduates in their work. Also by the number of graduates who return as mentors.

HOW CAN I VOLUNTEER? Give us a call at 860-501-9675. Attend and audit one of our classes to see what goes on. When you meet participants, you will want to come again. Email us at worknlearninc@gmail.com. Join this website.

WHAT CHURCH SPONSORS WORK & LEARN? Many. Work&Learn is inter-denominational, Bible-based, 100% volunteer-based, lay led, Christ-centered, tax-exempt, and nonprofit. Pastors and volunteers from dozens of churches instruct, mentor and coach.
